Why does PDF Clerk Pro open when I double click a Word file?

Hi, I’m new to the Mac and even newer to PDF Clerk Pro but like what I see on both counts.  However, having just upgraded to v3.1 whenever I double click to open a Word file PDF Clerk Pro opens instead of Word, which I find frustrating due to the amount of word processing I do.  How can I change this so that MS Word is the default program for opening Word documents?  In short despite my liking of PDF Clerk Pro, I don’t want it as my default viewing / editing program for any common files I use.  I wish to choose when to open PDF Clerk Pro to purely edit my PDF’s etc.

Interesting that that would happen. It’s not supposed to. However, it is easy to tell Macs what application you want to be the default for particular file types.

From the Mac OS X help file (I searched on “file type”):

To open a document with a specific application:
In the Finder, select the document and choose File > Get Info.
In the Info window, click the disclosure triangle next to “Open with.”
Choose the application you want to use from the pop-up menu.
If you want all documents of this file type to open with the same application, click Change All.

Thank you, that solved the issue immediately.  Much appreciated.

Hello,

The same thing happened to me when I upgraded to v3.1. Easy to fix but strange that it happened!

Regards,

Martin

Interestingly, I received a .doc file this morning and double clicking it indeed opened it in PDFClerk, instead of in Pages as it used to (I do not have MS Word installed).

PDFClerk does let the system know that it can read MS Word documents, in exactly the same way that it lets the system know it can read PDFs, text files and graphics files. Yet those, on my system, and I have not heard otherwise from clients, still open in their respective most appropriate applications, i.e. not in PDFClerk. E.g, PDFs still open in Preview by default, and PDFClerk even claims to be an editor for those. So I’ll have to contact Apple and see if they have any ideas why for .doc files PDFClerk Pro is promoted to the default application.

I’m having this issue, too, but changing the default application in the Finder is only working for the file I’ve selected; all other .DOC files open in PDF Clerk. It’s not a biggie, since I’m using Pages for my word processing and it’s a bit wonky trying to get it to be the default editor for Word files anyway, but still, it would be nice to fix this.

Thanks.

The solution to changing the default application is above in the second entry of this thread. Make sure you click “Change All” after selecting the application to open the file with.

Brilliant. Thank you. I should have read more closely; I was using the “Open with…” contextual menu. Your suggestion fixed the association everywhere. Thanks!
