This is my first time to join ANY forum, so please bear with me if things aren’t in proper format. I have been working with PDFClerk since version 1, and have magically produced books (which I bind)  and pamphlets which I staple. What I have being doing in every case is:
(1) I type my documents on 8.5X11” paper in either AppleWorks6 or NeoOffice (either works) using margins of 1.0” all around. Then I insert photos to produce a page which has 1 to 3 photographs with accompaning text. For a product, I have written up to 50 + pages, or as few as 4.
(2) Once all my pages pave been finished, I “print” or “export” each to PDF form.
(3) Then I import the group of PDF pictures into PDFClerk.
(4) Once there I go into View>Page>Display and make 2 changes in that heading: (1st) I go to imposition and set 2 pages per sheet side and (2nd) set “Facing Sheets”. If that’s all I do I get a beautifully printed document - BUT - the margins along the folded crease is not wide enough for binding (space works ok for pamphlets).

I’ve read everything including the new “Help” with version 2.5, and I’ve had more help than he can reasonably afford from TONIO, but I just can’t find the key. I’m sure I’m missing something or doing something stupid - can any of you help?

The easiest and best way to exercise control over the placement of the pages, like their distance from the folded crease is to adjust the setting of the imposition template. In this case you need to set a gutter. Since you are using the standard 2-up layout either temporarily adjust it, or create a new template with the same settings as the original 2-up template, but with the added gutter.

To specify a gutter for the 2-up layout you need to Gather Columns Horizontally Into Groups Of 1 and enter a value for the gutter.

I’ll add this topic to the help file for the next update.

As an aside, the “Facing Sheets” setting has no effect on printed output. It is merely a convenience setting for how the document is presented onscreen. I personally find it particularly useful to turn it on when preparing documents that are to be printed double sided, so that I can see the front and back sides of a sheet side by side.

I sometimes get the feeling that I’m not speaking the same language as Tonio. I’ve read so much and tried so many alternatives that I feel both tired and stupid. The US Marine Corp in World War II (that should date me for you) had an expression for my state - FUBAR - (I’ll partially translate that for you younger fellows) F——- up beyond all recognition. At this state, I’ve come to the conclusion the something is wrong - but I still don’t know what. I have followed recomendations as I understand them, and always end up when the change of the size of the gutter entered will not remain changed. When I leave the Imposition Edit function it promptly changes back to what it showed before. Any thoughts on what’s happening to me?

These days I’m often speaking Portuguese, and to a lesser extent Dutch, while I think I can safely assume you are always speaking English, so yes, we are not always speaking the same language. But hopefully we are when communicating with each other. grin

The only thing I can think of that would cause the adjusted settings to seemingly not stick, is that you are making the adjustments to the wrong template. Make sure that have selected the correct imposition template in the list on the left (in the Impositions Editor) before making the adjustments, and make sure you exit the editor by clicking the OK button.

If you are using a version prior to 2.5, then when exiting the editor the view will revert to the non-imposed layout, so you will have to re-select the desired layout. In 2.5 (and later) the selected layout usually remains the same (unless you reordered the layouts in the list, in which case the selected layout _may_ change).

If you continue to have trouble with this you can send me your templates file, which can be found in /<Your Hard Disk Name>/Library/Application Support/PDFClerk/Impositions.plist (or, if you are using a beta version: Beta Impositions.plist). I’ll then check out the impositions, and will send back the file with the necessary adjustments.

This is getting embarassing. I lost the reply I was typing, if it shows up ignore it. I just said that I KNEW we were speaking a different language - it was the technical one - I can’t read any program language, not even basic. Further, I’m not only ignorant, I’m also pretty dumb on such matters. So if you do find the errors in my ways, just remember the key acronym - KISS (keep it simple, stupid). I’m ignoring Beta and just sending the Impositions.plist….... I don’t know how to send the Impositions list - your form won’t allow it - what do I do now ?

Eukera!! You’ve done it. I think both of us will be glad to end this exchange…. Oh I’ll probably have future questions that I’ll be happy to send on to you. For now let me thank you for your unbelievable rapid reply to what constitute stupid questions. And even more helpful, your willingness to switch to my amateur work methods in order to make sure I did understand what was needed. I do have some more thoughts about “using a different language”, but I’ll forward them by seperate e-mail in a day or so.
